Venetian Macau opens to public

American billionaire Sheldon Adelson has opened what he claims is the world's largest casino floor in Asia's largest building in the Chinese gambling enclave of Macau. The Las Vegas Sands Corporation chairman and his wife, Miriam, marked the opening of the Venetian Macao Resort Hotel by smashing a bottle of champagne against the front of a gondolas at a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The $2.4 billion resort opened to hundreds of visitors, including some who posed for pictures under the resort's golden dome ceiling after Chinese firecrackers were set off. Casinos like the Wynn and Adelson's Sands have already helped the small city in southern China surpass the Las Vegas Strip as the world's most lucrative gambling center. Adelson says he hopes the new resort will transform Macau from a gambling pit stop for Chinese tourists to a vacation and business convention destination. KVBC
