Veteran jockey Nicol earns 3,000th career win

Jockey Paul Nicol earned his 3,000th North American career victory by rallying Passing Ships to a win in the fourth race on Tuesday at Finger Lakes.
Nicol, 45, joins Leslie Hulet and Kevin Whitley as the only riders at the Farmington, New York, track to reach the milestone. Nicol was the leading rider at Finger Lakes in 1993, ten years after leading the jockey standings at Pimlico Race Course.

A native of Annapolis, Maryland, Nicol earned his lone graded stakes win aboard Double Screen in the 1997 Finger Lakes Breeders' Cup Stakes (G3). The 25-year riding veteran is a career winner of 64 stakes races and earned his most lucrative win aboard Background Artist in the $150,000 New York Breeders' Futurity in '93.

Since 1981, Nicol's 18,338 mounts have earned $25,916,166.
