I'm really new to poker and I want something to practice on before I start playing for real money. Do you think video poker is a good way to learn?

Hey coolcasinoguy

Video Poker is completely different game than live poker, say Texas Hold'em for instance.... home poker games are good places to learn. Video Poker is primarily five card draw.... you CAN play our free video poker game here:

Video poker might be a useful way to learn which hand beats which hand.. as for learning to play, I'd check out the free tables on Titan or somewhere like that, catch a freeroll or two.. and then get awaaaay from the freebie tables hehe.

They are great for learning the progression of the game, but hang around to long and you will learn some reaaaally bad poker habits!

Is it Holdem you are interested in learning specifically? Or just any kind of Poker?

Yep, video poker is a whole different ballgame...excuse me, card game...from regular table poker. That being said, video poker is fun in and of itself! I suppose video poker would at least help you learn about the different hands, but that's about as far as your learning would go. There are some really great poker sites out there where you can play for "fun money", and it is a wonderful way to learn about table poker, especially Texas Holdem. There are even "fun money" tournaments, and also freeroll tournaments that pay you real money if you finish on or near the top. These are great ways to get to know the game without watching money slip through your fingers.

Hate to jump on the band wagon but they are right. Must any online roon has play money tables though. Just remember it is play money and most people play like it is but you will learn the ins and outs of the poker site itself and how it works.

If you are brand new to poker, I would suggest a book to get started in. Internet Texas Holdem by Mathew Hilger was my first one. Great book!

Just a thought.
