WAR And Average White Band Headed To Silver Legacy
- Two Of America’s Musical Trendsetters Set To Perform November 10th -
Reno, Nevada (August 3, 2007) - American original WAR and one of the best soul and funk bands in the history of music, Average White Band will be performing together on one stage in the Grande Exposition Hall at Silver Legacy Resort Casino on November 10th at 8 p.m.
WAR was the first and most successful musical crossover phenomenon that forever fused rock, jazz, Latin and R&B, while transcending racial and cultural barriers with a multi-ethnic line-up; a musical melting pot and an enduring influence that has sold nearly 25 million records to date.
Today, WAR is a permanent part of America’s pop cultural landscape. A touring act that performs 150 shows a year and whose catalogue of timeless hits permeates our everyday lives. WAR classics have been featured in countless movies, television shows and commercials. Films such as The Mexican, How High and Remember the Titans; TV shows such as ER, That 70’s Show and The Simpsons; TV ads for products like Nissan, Mitsubishi, Miller Brewing, Burger King and Sprint PCS have kept WAR music in the forefront our minds.
Their music has also been re-spun by many contemporary artists from Janet Jackson to Korn, Smashmouth to Shaggy and from Macy Gray to TLC with covers or samples of WAR hits.
WAR, the original street band, was the brainchild of veteran record producer Jerry Goldstein ("My Boyfriend’s Back," "Hang On Sloopy" and "I Want Candy") and rock legend Eric Burdon (ex-lead singer of the top British band The Animals).
The year was 1969 and these "kids" had the nerve to carry the name WAR at a time when peace was the slogan in an anti-Vietnam America. "Our mission was to spread the message of brotherhood and harmony," states WAR founder, singer/keyboardist Lonnie Jordan. "Our instruments and voices became our weapons of choice and the songs our ammunition. We spoke out against racism, hunger, gangs, crimes and the turf wars, as we embraced all people with hope and the spirit of brotherhood. It’s just as apropos today."
WAR would wind up being honored with 17 gold, platinum or multi-platinum awards, which include the triple platinum The World Is A Ghetto, double platinum Why Can’t We Be Friends? and Greatest Hits, platinum Deliver The Word, WAR Live, All Day Music, Best Of WAR and more.
In late 1971 WAR released All Day Music, the title track would be the group’s first hit single and their first gold single "Slippin Into Darkness" followed, propelling the album to over 1 million sales and a winning streak that would continue for years.
Joining WAR is Average White Band who are perhaps best known for their timeless instrumental mega-hit "Pick Up The Pieces." The band’s strength actually lay in their consistently accomplished song writing, stretching across several gold selling albums and multi-Grammy nominations.
The six piece band took the influences of their R&B heroes - people like Marvin Gaye, James Brown, Donny Hathaway and others - and developed their own authentic sound, which was eagerly adopted by black audiences in the US and elsewhere. Whilst a good number of cuts - "Cut The Cake" and "Let’s Go Round Again" to name but two - attracted chart action as hit singles, many other album tracks, like "Schoolboy Crush" and "Stop The Rain" became much sampled and turn tabled rare grooves. Many more tunes, such as "Cloudy," "A Love Of Your Own" and "Nothing You Can Do" amongst many others, stand alongside some of the finest soul album tracks ever recorded.
All this and more is perfectly illustrated in the band’s latest release Soul And The City, which showcases the breadth and depth of the band’s material, all captured within the excitement of a 2006 live performance.
