WEIRTON, WV -- Fueled by revenue from video lottery machines, the West Virginia Lottery's sales have exceeded $1.5 billion dollars for the first time.
Locally, Weirton Mayor Bill Miller said the city projects to take in about $25,000 more this year than it did last year. Miller said that is about $275,000 total dollars, and a big increase when you consider they were only taking in about $40,000 whe the machines first came online.
The Lottery Commission says sales for the fiscal year ending June 30th broke a record set in 2005, when sales totaled $1.39 billion dollars.
Sales from limited video lottery machines in bars, clubs and fraternal organizations rose 17% to $52 million dollars.
Video slot sales at the state's four racetracks increased 5% to $48 million dollars.
The state received more than $663 million dollars in lottery profits to pay for senior programs, PROMISE scholarships, parks, school construction and tourism.
This is the fourth consecutive year that lottery sales have exceeded $1 billion dollars.
Lottery Director John Musgrave says he doesn't expect any more record-setting years because of looming competition in neighboring Pennsylvania. |
