ATLANTIC CITY — Wednesdays at The Pool at Harrah's Atlantic City quickly became the hottest party in the city.
So why did Harrah's shut it down?

That depends on whom you ask. Reports have swirled as to what happened at The Pool, including waitresses being harassed and people throwing beer into the pool.

It originally was thought that police were called in to break up a Wednesday-night party that fell on the July 4 holiday, but police confirmed that only one call came in from The Pool on the morning of July 5, a call about a disorderly female that came from the valet parking workers.

Alyce Parker, a spokeswoman for Harrah's, said the staff was “overwhelmed” by the number of people who showed up Wednesdays, especially July 4, when she said they were full to capacity with more than 1,400 people and hundreds more waiting to be admitted outside.

Others, especially city residents, feel the decision to close was unnecessary and insinuated that closing Wednesdays unfairly shut out Atlantic City residents and casino workers. Many casino workers are off either Tuesday and Wednesday or Wednesday and Thursday.
Jimmy Bair, who attended parties at The Pool on Wednesdays, called the crowd “beautiful” and found Harrah's decision unfair.

“There are situations where people can get out of hand,” said Bair, an Atlantic City resident. “But instead of Harrah's dealing with it, they shut it down and made everyone suffer.”

A spokesman for Harrah's said the casino recently hired a new nightlife director who will be involved in re-evaluating the situation. The casino is considering reopening The Pool on Wednesday or possibly Tuesday nights.
