Wichita Greyhound Park To Close In October
Phil Ruffin, Jr., Director of Operations of Wichita Greyhound Park, announced today that the last day of racing at the track will be October 6, 2007. The announcement was made after a recount of ballots from the August 7 election confirmed that slot machines would not be allowed at the track.

“The vote on slot machines at the racetrack is now final,” Ruffin said. “Without slot machines, the track is simply not economically viable. Our goal now is to help transition our employees to new jobs and greyhounds to other racing venues or adoptive homes.”

While the last day of racing at the track is October 6, some employees will have jobs through November 2.

“We have wonderful employees at Wichita Greyhound Park who would be great assets to any organization,” said Shelli Baker, General Manger. “We are like a family here.”

According to Baker, greyhounds will move to other tracks to race or be returned to their owners. Any remaining greyhounds will be placed up for adoption.

Race the Wind Greyhound Adoption, Inc., a non-profit organization which maintains an office and kennel at the track, will coordinate the adoptions. Anyone interested in adopting a greyhound should contact Race the Wind at (316) 755-4000 extension 243 or visit their website at www.racethewind.org.

“The track will be providing Race the Wind with the resources to care for the greyhounds until adoptive homes can be found,” Baker said. “We hope that anyone who is considering adding a new pet to his or her family will consider adopting a greyhound.”

The Kansas Racing & Gaming Commission has set up a process to monitor every greyhound leaving the track. A form designating the final destination of every greyhound must be submitted to the Commission prior to its departure.

“The welfare of greyhounds is a top priority for us and for the Kansas Racing & Gaming Commission,” Baker said.

Until October 6, the track will be open for live racing Wednesday through Saturday evenings at 7PM and Sunday afternoons at 1PM, with simulcast wagering available daily after 11AM.
