Winner of Powerball lottery unknown
Someone who bought a Powerball lottery ticket in Hickory Valley is $1 million richer, but he or she might not know it yet.
The winner had not come forward to claim the prize as of Thursday evening, a Tennessee Lottery spokeswoman said.
The ticket sold in the Hardeman County town matched five white balls in Wednesday night's Powerball drawing, which usually means a $200,000 prize, according to a press release from the Tennessee Lottery. However, that win was increased to $1 million since the Power Play multiplier drawn was five, and the person who bought the ticket chose the Power Play option.
The lucky winner is the 12th Tennessee Lottery player to win $1 million or more since the lottery began selling tickets on Jan. 20, 2004, the release said.
The Powerball jackpot is estimated at $20 million for the next drawing, which will be on Saturday. In addition, the Lotto 5 jackpot is $525,000 for the next drawing, to be held Friday.
As of June 30, the lottery has raised more than $636 million to fund specific education programs, including college scholarships, pre-kindergarten and after-school programs, according to the release.
