A young woman was kidnapped in Ho Chi Minh City on Wednesday night, for a ransom of VND70 million (US$4,400), the sum her separated husband owed the kidnappers in unpaid gambling debts.

Tran Thi Thu, 26, from Long An province in the Mekong Delat, was kidnapped by four men at 9:35pm Wednesday as she rode her motorbike in Binh Chanh district.

The four kidnappers took her to a deserted house where she was detained until the following morning.

Whether or not she paid the sum has not been reported yet.

The case was brought to police Thursday morning by her boyfriend Nguyen Ngoc P., 29, of Binh Chanh district, who only found out after she had been released and related the story to him.

The case is currently under investigation
