Wood Village Casino Pushers Say They'll Wait Until '08

Remember the idea to put a White Man’s casino in Wood Village, and giving its owners a monopoly on non-Indian gaming establishments in Oregon? The idea that became a state initiative whose backers were willing to spend millions of dollars from secretive funders?
Yeah, well, it ain’t gonna happen. At least, not this year.
The casino proposers said this week they won’t spend the millions it would probably take to pay signature-gatherers to qualify their initiative for the November ballot. Rather, they’ll wait until 2008 to ask Oregon voters to alter the state Constitution and allow them their gambling complex at the abandoned greyhound track in Wood Village, west of Gresham.
This is good news for the Indian tribes like the Grand Ronde, who have been spending money on politics like a gambler on a losing streak in an effort to derail or at least slow down the non-tribal casino. It also gives the Warm Springs tribes more time to get their potential Cascade Locks casino established.
But, more, it’s good news for the rest of us Oregonians, who should get a chance to see who’s bankrolling the whole scheme.
See, so far, the casino scheme has been fronted by a couple Lake Oswego guys. The wealthy persons or companies behind them have remained a secret. Any episode where the public gets to lift the veil of secrecy from big money interests is a small blow struck for a free society.
