World Series of Poker: Palatka resident in second round

Ten-time bracelet holders Doyle Brunson and Phil Hellmuth Jr. are gone. So are top-notch players like Tiffany Williamson, Gavin Smith and Paul Darden.

But Daryl Futch is still around.

The Palatka resident advanced to the next round of the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas, which involves 2,200 players. Today, Futch will play starting at 3 p.m. (noon in Las Vegas) in the hopes to make it to the next cut, which will bring the number of competitors to 1,400 for play on Friday.

If Futch, who reached the tournament after winning an initial tournament on the PartyPoker Web site (with a $55 admission) and then finished in the top eight of a 450-player online tournament after that, can get past today and Friday, he will be among 600 players competing on Saturday.
