New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority President George Zoffinger implored industry members and state lawmakers Thursday to exert their influence to bring video lottery terminals (VLTs) or slot machines to the Meadowlands.
Zoffinger made his comments at Monmouth Park Thursday prior to the post position draw for Sunday's $1-million Haskell Invitational Handicap (G1), one of two Grade 1 races in New Jersey.

"There are a lot of people in this room who can exert their influence to help get VLTs or slots at the Meadowlands to shore up this industry, given the competition coming from New York, Pennsylvania, and Delaware," Zoffinger said. "We've got to do something to get behind this effort, not just for the horsemen, breeders, and fans, but to preserve green space in the state."

New Jersey's purse structure has been bolstered in recent years from an $84-million subsidy from Atlantic City casinos, which object from an expansion of casino gaming outside the city limits. That subsidy will expire after the 2007 racing season. Monmouth Park's average purse distribution for the first 40 days of its 2006 meet was $347,461.

Published reports earlier this month stated that Governor Jon Corzine met privately with Atlantic City casino executives last month and voiced his opposition to installing gaming machines at the Meadowlands, but added that the idea "deserves a look" because of increased competition in neighboring states.

VLT facilities are due to open later this year or in early 2007 at Aqueduct Racetrack in New York and Philadelphia Park, in Bensalem, Pennsylvania, with an expansion also in the works at Delaware Park.
