Knowing that I wouldn't be spending much time in the room, I was looking for somewhere inexpensive. This hotel definitely fit the bill. It's best feature was the central location - you can actually walk everywhere with no problem. The room was clean with no frills, very spartan. It's certainly nothing fancy, but perfect if you don't need any amenities. Would not reco the continental breakfast, but there are some cute breakfast places nearby - try Roxanne's Cafe. Also a computer located in the lobby for guest use. I would stay here again.

Wow, I'm all for traveling on a budget, and we like to take trips to "the city" many times a year, and we like to try out different areas of town, and different hotels as well, but this one was terrible, I've stayed in hostels that were better. One reviewer wrote about the a slight strange smell in the hallway, but they should have been more clear....it was an overwhelming stench in the hallway. In most cases, you do get what you pay for, but San Francisco has plenty of wonderful reasonably priced hotels that don't make you feel like you're going to be robbed or get a disease from the bathroom. Save yourself, don't stay here, it's not worth the funny story it makes for later.

We found the hotel to be a great tourist level hotel. Nothing fancy here, it is a very old hotel (as most are in the Union Square area), but the bathroom had been recently remodeled, and it was clean. The rooms are small (very typical for San Francisco) and the furnishing very plain, but with so much to do in San Francisco, who spends much time in the room? Breakfast was just pastries and coffee or tea, with juice and other beverages available for a very modest charge. The free WiFi worked in the lobby but not in the rooms. They also had a public computer you could use if you don't have a laptop with you. The location was great, with a cable car stop a 1/2 block away. Chinatown, Union Square and the Market/Powell BART station are all within walking distance or a short cable car ride away. Fisherman's Wharf, Pier 39 and the boats to Alcatraz can all be reached by riding the cable cars to the end of the line. At $5 each ride, consider a cable car pass or City Pass, which will quickly pay for itself. We had a great time in San Francisco, and we would stay at the Grant Hotel again.

When we booked this hotel is had a 2 star rating. . We were booked to stay three nights. As soon as we opened the door to the hotel we were hit with a very bad smell. It was like someone had sprayed 20 cans of air freshener trying to cover something up & it didn't work. The smell in the hotel room was just as bad. I had the window fully open trying to air it out & it didn't improve. I had to close the window because it got cold & the smell just got worse, I thought I would be sick. The bed only had two pillows & there were no spares in the cupboard. I asked for two more & it took a long time for them to find some & they were so thin I shouldn't have bothered. Apparently everyone in the hotel had asked for extra pillows. The window in our room din't even lock. The noise from the street, the people upstairs & the people next door kept us up all night. We moved to a new place the next morning. We knew this was a budget hotel & we weren't expecting the Ritz. Still, they need to make an effort. The towels in the bathroom were small, old, worn & off white. They didn't look clean & we refused to use them. The smell has gotten into our clean clothes in the suitcase in less than 24 hours & will need to be washed. This was the worst experience ever. They didn't question us why we were leaving.

This was my first visit to SF so I have a bit of trouble comparing this hotel to others in the area. The rooms were clean, although this is an old hotel (kind of takes you back in time) . This is perfect for someone that wants to be downtown, pay very little for a room and doesn't mind that there aren't any amenities. Basically a clean bed and bath....no frills "
