This was by far the nicest resort I've ever visited among many - Ford's Colony, Kingsmill, several Bed and Breakfasts. I was visiting to attend a conference held on grounds. The conference facilities were superb. I brought my wife and infant along for the trip. They enjoyed their experiences throroughly also. The hotel was nearly the nicest room I've ever had also. Ground level walkout and fridge was included for a great price - both were very nice to have for a nearly 1 week stay. Service at the restaurants was subpar, but service on all other accounts was excellent. I would recommend getting food at any one of many restaurants just around the resort on the drive in. Especially recommend the surfer restaurant on the water in Kings Village I think.

We *just* stayed at the Hilton Waikoloa #40as in: last week March 12-18 2011#41. I have to say our experience was great. The staff was extraordinarily helpful notably the concierge staff and the front desk housekeeping was thorough and prompt and the pool and beach staff were great if a bit harried #40it was spring break in much of the states and the place was booked solid#41. There were a few exceptions to this: we noticed that room service trays were left outside room for most of the day. We did run into one staff member at a coffee shop who swore within earshot. Its not Disney World fine but there were children present and so I didnt think it was appropriate. Other than that though we were well-cared for. The pools and lagoon are amazing. I dont think you come to the Big Island for beaches thats Mauis domain so the lagoon was nice to have and safe for the kids. I am not sure where all the quotboring roomquot reviews are coming from because our cabana room was tastefully updated and PLUSH. Yes there are #40pretty high#41 fees for everything and yes food and other things even at the higher-end restaurants are hotel-standard and really expensive but jeez leave the hotel once in a while! I loved the tram and boats. Slow you bet but youre on vacation. :-#41 Our kids were entranced with the turtles in the lagoon and they met many other kids and made lots of friends. Its a GREAT hotel for families though probably not for couples. I am conflicted about the dolphins but I also could have booked a stay elsewhere. Our requested in-room amenities were waiting for us even though the room was assigned not fifteen minutes prior. :-#41 Would stay again.

Our kids were 6 and 8 and it was by far the absolute best family trip we have taken to Hawaii! Yes the food was expensive but there are ways around it. We went to Costco and stocked up on the basics and saved a bunch. Having the refridgerator in the room make this possible. We only ate out for dinner. We even bought the makings for our own Mai Tais! That was a HUGE savings! We will be going back again this year.

If you are traveling with kids book the quotFamily Ocean Explorerquot package. You get the room breakfast buffet included #40though we expected to have this every morning and we only had enough vouchers for three of our six mornings I am guessing they want you to pay for a couple of breakfasts but the Lagoon Spoon was a HUGE hit#41 activity backpacks for the kids and a glass-bottom boat cruise. Interestingly A-Bay took a pretty good hit from the tsunami on march 11 and the boat was damaged so Ocean Sports set us up with a replacement activity namely unlimited access wristbands for the lagoon activities which turned out to be a better deal and more fun anyway. -#41

Pretty place. Poor service, expensive extra fees for everything.

Examples of chintzy overpriced charges: $* for 10 minutes on the putting green, $* for a glass of juice. For the most part, the food was pretty good. The Thanksgiving buffet was surprisingly tasty and abundant. Many of the conceirges were ignorant and unhelpful. Occassionally a staff member was superb, like the concierge working near the grand buffet breakfast. But many of the staff were surly and overworked. On Thanksgiving week, they ran out of towels on 2 separate days, at 2 different pools. The excuse: "It's the holiday"--yeah, that's why we came here on vacation! We went looking for a hammock where a concierge told us we'd find one. We found that it had broken and been removed. As others have said, the pools were cold, especially for young children. The brochure for Camp Menehune promised that on Tuesday it would be a theme day about petroglyphs and volcanos. Instead my son played duck-duck-goose and searched for broken glass on the beach ("look at my crystals, Mommy!"). Note for those with very young kids: this place is very spread out. It takes about 15 minutes to walk from the Ocean Tower to the front lobby. There is a tram and a boat service to transport guests around, but often you end up walking rather than wait 17 minutes for them to make the round trip.
