Hotel Santo Tomas is an excellent hotel for the money if you are looking for a Costa Rican experince. There is always someone at the front desk that speaks English and Spanish that is willing to help with simple where to? how to? questions, calling a taxi or booking any number of all day trips. The entire staff is friendly and eager to help you enjoy your stay. The interior of this renovated 100 year old structure is charming and comfortable with mahogony hardwood floors, very high (12 to 14 ft) beaded wood ceilings, fresh flowers and constant maintenance of the facility. The pool and hot tub area is a nice quiet place read, sun and relax. The location is within easy walking distance to the downtown area and 1 block from the high rise Holiday Inn. Breakfast is included. The breakfast included a good assortment of fresh tropical fruit, coffee, boiled eggs, pastry and juice. I would recommend this hotel for singles, couples and small groups. This is not a place for a raucous spring break crowd, although it is a good place to enjoy the restaurants and nite life of San Jose. OK for children but more suited to adults. I was upgraded to a larger room upon arrival for my February 2010 stay, presumably just because the larger room was available. The room safe is a plus. I originally booked this hotel because of the pool and hot tub and was glad I did.

Staying here right now. Few days to go. Great big and well-appointed rooms. Was initially concerned by lack of AC, but I see now why they don't have it; it's not needed. Actually, nights get cool enough for comforters. Centrally located for VERY easy shopping, eating, and partying. The food at the restaurant is to die for and service (Carlos?) is beyond belief. One word of warning: Bringing another guest in means walking through frontdesk. I had literally entered the room when frontdesk called the room to inform of extra charge. I was ok w/ the extra charge, but the way it was handled seemed oddly intrusive and suddenly curt. I would stay here again.

A Real Jewel Amidst Crowded City

My husband and I went to San Jose to visit our daughter who is studying at ULACIT which is right downtown so we wanted to be close to the building. I chose the Hotel Santo Tomas because of that. It is perfect for walking right into the Central Avenue where all the shops, restaurants, food vendors, famous National Theatre and other historic buildings are. We were there in the "rainy" season (which is a misnomer; it seems to rain after 3pm or in the night). The room had a comfy double bed, view of the lovely little courtyard with a small pool (very clean), nice shower/tub. This was on the bottom floor, but there are 10 more rooms upstairs (probably newer, but we like the old ambiance). This hotel was a Victorian home, so we walked it and tried to figure out where the changes were. It was quiet, quiet; we slept like babies (and the city is quite noisy). The staff caters to every request with graciousness. Louis and Alan were on the front desk, and treat every guest as if they were your personal assistant. They speak fluent English, Spanish, etc. This is very important to those of us who know only 2 words in Spanish! The Continental breakfast is lovely; self-service in the courtyard; happy hour 4-6; dinner is very good if you're nervous about walking too far after dark (cabs are cheap and abundant; Louis will call for you). Oh, and no bugs; believe me, Iooked for them; we stayed 6 nights. So, if you stay here, do not plan to wear anything but flat shoes, no flip flops (even though Costa Rican women love their high heels); the streets are very uneven and narrow at times. You will love this place.
