  First, we love Lugano and spend one night in Lugano enroute from Zurich to our small home in Italy. The train from Zurich to Lugano is about 2.5 hours and 1.0 hours from Milan. We have visited the Splendide Royal several times. We recommend a room in the older (original) building. Try to reserve a room on the 2nd or 3rd floor with a balcony or terrace (we were on the 4th floor which has dormer windows; still a wonderful room). The dining is excellent; especially al fresco on the Patio . . both dinner and breakfast (buffet) were most enjoyable. One drawback : they have a indoor pool . . disappointing because a nearby hotel has a pool right on the Lake
