We visited the Whitcomb hotel in October 2010 for the first time as well as California for the first time! We loved our stay. Our rooms had 2 double beds with comfortable mattresses. My bed was not made though when we first arrived to our rooms but was done when we told the front desk and from there on. They need to upgrade their televisions because we had a remote control. Other than that the hotel was splendid. The guests should be prepared for the amount of beggars and homelessness problem in the city. Sams Diner is across the street with excellent but economical food! The restaurant inside the hotel is a bit pricey. I ate there once doing my 5 day stay as a treat . The bed is soooo comfortable that I am going to make it a point to revisit this hotel again in the future. We were made to feel welcome there which we appreciate so much. LOVE IT LOVE IT! Well BE BACK!!!!!!!! Thanks for a wonderful stay!!!

There are few places to go around this hotel, especially in the evening. It is not in a nice part of SF. We see homeless people hanging around everywhere. Even worse, during the weekend we stayed there, the hotel hosted a convention which I will not name here. It filled with people who smoke, it created an enviroment just uncomfortable and family unfriendly. The servie was slow. The room is old and tiny. The bed was comfortable though.

considering the hotel is almost 100 years old it is in pretty good shape. the hotel was kept very clean. check in takes awhile and the front desk staff is not the friendliest. i dealt with 3 concierges during my 5-day stay. J gets a little flustered but is overly helpful and gives great tips on were to eat. she even got me discount tickets to Wicked across the street at the Orpheum! the other 2 concierges were not very pleasant at all! L the singing doorman is great! the only other major complaint is the walls are paper thin...i mean REALLY thin. i could hear everything in the adjoining room thru the connecting door. that was annoying! the hotel is in the middle of market street and conveniently close to public transportation: i took the F-line to fishermans wharf took the California street cable car to Grant st and Chinatown took a taxi to the Sausalito ferry. but not many places to eat in the immediate area. sams diner is across the street and is good for breakfast...have H cook your pancakes! soluna cafe is a few blocks away near the civic center and has great drinks - go for happy hour. other than that its quot3quot VERY LONG blocks to the start of union square and other eateries. dont try to walk it if youre starving or in a hurry! the location is great the price was right and since i didnt spend much time in the room i would likely stay here again. also you have to show your room key to enter the hotel after a certain time at night so that was a plus considering its on a main street.

This hotel is right on Market Street and across from the Civic Center BART station. It has easy access to any type of transportation that you need. The age of the hotel is in spirit only, with small rooms, but very well appointed. Everyone we met was very friendly and helpful. They have an internet cafe as well as a Starbucks just off the lobby, not to mention a full bar and restaurant. We really enjoyed out stay and would recommend it to anyone on a budget, but wanting the old fashioned charm of a high dollar establishment. I would definitely stay there again! A Very satisfied traveler!!
