What is impressive about this hotel is that it is a historical building but the amenities we're very modern. Don't be fooled.. this is a very well appointed Intercontinental hotel. The Club Room was particulary nice. The rooms were LARGE (I had a junior suite but it seemed much larger than other junior suites I've stayed in other hotels). Also, the location cannot be beat. Two blocks from all the action off of 6th Street and just down the street from the Capital Building. The hotel definitely earned my business from now on.

The Good: I was there for two days the hotel staff was really friendly and helpful vallet parking was about $* per night with unlimited in and out the bar on the 2nd floor and the mini bar are very expensive (20-50% more than usual bar) but the atmosphere was great very close the the Texas State capital The Bad : there is a bus stop near by, and there are alot of werid/shadey/homeless people maybe just 100 feet down the street, which was scary especially at night. the bar tender told me that Austin just have more homeless......

Stayed here as a weekend trip with the wife. Very beautiful lobby, staff, including receptionist and room service, were all helpful. The valet guys were always on top of it, even with the cold nights. Construction on 7th, in front of the hotel was a little annoying but I undertake that's temporary. Rooms were well put, have a real old school classiness about it. Bed had tons if pillows and comfortable mattress. Pool / spa / gym were well laid out and nice. My only disappointments about it was the shower wasn't that great, the shower heads gave very awkwardly placed pressure, and not a good full even type feel. And the TV was pretty cheesy, like a 21" zenith, 1990's type convex TV. Not something you'd expect spending $* a night. We stayed on the 14th floor, in the King Deluxe suite. Had a minibar, couch and living area. Overall, having that close access to 6th street, and pretty much in the heart close to everything in Austin, i would recommend this to friends ad family, and we would probably stay here again. PS: the hotel restaurant had ok food, not something I'd expect for the money we paid for just an appetizer and dessert ($30)

We only stayed one night because of a Chirstmas Party in Austin. I have stayed in a few different hotels in Austin, both high-end and economy. This is the first time I had stayed in an Intercontinental (and probably the last.) The Hotel is luxurious in the lobby, and the rooms had nice finishes. However, the finishes were poorly maintained (cracked caulk, scuffed up paint, etc.). The hot water in the sink was scalding while the hot water in the shower was luke-warm. To top it off, the water had a strange smell to it. Pool is a strong word for the facility in the basement. Good for swimming laps only. Also, for the cost of the room you would think some of the little extras would be thrown in like wireless internet or more than one cup of coffee. To top everything off, they charged us for a bottle of water which we did not drink. The only advantage the hotel had was the walk to 6th street. For what I spent, I could have stayed in a nicer place and used the extra money for a cab back and forth. The other thing I may do next time is spend the extra $* and stay in the Driskill.
