Arrived late, dog tired, having driven about 500 miles. Waited my turn at the front desk, with three people ahead, including a man who needed extra help stashing a bicycle. Dying to just get to our room and crash, and the front desk clerk is just at the point of running my card and handing me the card-key when some pushy guy comes up asking questions. Incredibly, with several other people now in line behind me, the clerk stops in mid-process to hear this guy out––and takes care of him ahead of me and everyone else. Yes, I blew my stack. No, I won't be coming back. Taking people in turn is pretty basic customer service. If that's lacking, there's not much else to make up for it. The accommodations are basic. In fact, when I called to book a room, the phone system didn't even put me on hold or take a message! There was no one available to take my call. We've used the University Place many times over the years, this had never happened before. UP once had an attached bar and restaurant that made this place more convenient. That apparently folded about a year ago.

We stayed in mid-August 2010. We chose this hotel based on its convenient location to Downtown Portland/Pearl District. University Place was very pleasant, the rooms were clean, rates were reasonable, a decent complimentary Continental breakfast; absolutely nothing to complain about. The location was terrific for us, just south of DT Portland/Pearl District. A brisk walk down to Burnside took, at most, 15 minutes. If you don't enjoy walking, the northbound MAX is located two block west on 6th and seems to run into city center every 10 - 15 minutes. Returning MAX is on 5th. The entire ride through DT and over to Lloyd Center is in the ride free zone. I am certainly staying here when I return to Portland.

Desk clerks more than helpful with suggestions to visit, maps, eateries, making reservations, etc. Pool was beautifl and they allowed us to stay at pool even after we checked out since our plane didn't leave until 9:30 that evening. They are jusy that nice and accomodating. Free Breakfast, contnental, was very good with a wide selection of healthy eating including fruits. it does end T 9 AM AND MOST DAYS WE DIDN'T MAKE IT. Didn't like pillows, too soft, but there was many of them, 5 in our 2 queen bed room. You do not need to rent a car in dowtown Portland since the trolleys are everwhere and free. Also the hotel is in the southern section of downtown near the river so easy access to the highways and you do not need to deal with downtown traffic. We did rent a car at nearby Budget and left the car there to bypass the $*/day charge at the hotel. evertyone qas very nice and acommodating. Beds were A+ and clean...ditto shower. It not Taj Mahal but it is very accommodating and a lovely experience!

University Place was the perfect hotel for me...within walking distance to shopping, food, farmer's market, Pioneer Square...it was easy in and out for driving as well. Beautiful pool area, private and sheltered...the staff was very helpful in giving directions any time I asked. In all, this was an excellent travel experience!
