As of late 2016, Taipa is currently home to four operating casinos and a horse track. All are located on the western half of the island. The casinos here don't enjoy the same level of traffic that resorts on the Macau Peninsula, or the newer integrated resorts in Cotai do, but there is still a good amount of action including some from high rollers at the premier properties.

The biggest casino on the island is Casino Altira with 173,000 sq ft of gaming space (formerly Crown Macau until 2009). Altira is a Forbes Five Star Hotel & Spa with an opulent casino. In 2008 this casino did the greatest volume in history with high rollers, posting up over $6 billion in rolling chip turnover in a single month. Casino Taipa Square is another Melco Crown property in Taipa. Casino Taipa Square features table games and a Mocha Club right in the casino.

Casino Grandview is located across from the Macau Jockey Club and provided the only casino action in the immediate area for a decade until Casino Macau Jockey Club re-opened at the track in 2014. SJM holds the ultimate concession on these casino licenses. The location is highly desirable, directly adjacent to an upcoming public transport hub that is expected to serve as a transfer point for buses, shuttles, and the Macau Light Rail Transit system which should be operational by 2019. The Macau Jockey Club holds races all year round. Seasons start in September and end at the end of August the following year. There are two meets per week.

To the north, you'll find the currently closed Greek Mythology Casino in the Hotel Palacio Imperial Beijing, which is also closed. The casino closed on December 31, 2015, but the operators say it is a temporary closure. Across the street in the Regency was also a casino called Casino Taipa, but that license is still suspended as well and not as likely to be re-activated there.

Taipa is also a great place to visit for history and to see the local Macau people in their regular day to day life of working and going to school.  If you want a break from the Vegas-style casinos, catch a quick cab to the heart of Taipa.  Make sure if you do not speak the local dialect to get your hotel staff to write down where you want to go for the cabbie to see where he is taking you - trust us, it will save you a lot of hassle.

Pari-mutuel betting involves betting on horse and greyhound racing and is one of the most widespread forms of gambling. Betting can be done two ways, either through pari-mutuel pools or bookmakers taking bets. Pari-mutuel wagers pay off at odds determined by the amount of betters in wagering pools. Bookmakers wager pay offs are determined either at the time of accepting bets or by the odds at the beginning of the race.

The Island of Taipa is one of two cities in Macau. They offer pari-mutuel betting every Sunday at Macau Jockey Club. They boast state-of-the-art computerized betting equipment and includes Win, Place, Quinella (a simple bet offering a large payout from a small bet by picking two horses and finish 1, 2 in any order in a race) Quinella Place and Tierce (or Trifecta where you pick three horses to finish 1, 2, 3 in a race). The Club offers two tracks, a turf track and a sand track which are one mile oval track. The turf track is only for races but the sand track serves for both training and racing. The one mile oval track Macau Jockey Club has a rare Buddha “Shrine of the Four Faces” at the end of its track and it’s only the third of its kind. The other two Buddha’s are in Las Vegas and Bangkok. Some meanings pertaining to it are faith and luck.

Professional Jockeys, Trainers and horses come from all over the world to Macau Jockey Club; Australia New Zealand, France, England, Brazil, South Africa, Czech Republic, Turkey and Hong Kong. The Macau Jockey Club is one of the largest private employers of Macau with an estimated 1,200 employees in which about 600 are stable hands. The Club had the inaugural 1993 Macau International Apprentice Jockey Invitation Races in which they invited all Asian Racing Federation member countries to have their top apprentices come and compete. The race has been run 11 times successfully except for the year 2003 when it was cancelled due to the SARS outbreak. The Club was the first Asian Racing Organization to have the press come and view racing enquiries, which increased its accuracy and integrity. In 1999 they exhibited their international status when they hosted the 26th Asian Racing Conference.
