Louisiana Lotto

Lotto is Louisiana's oldest in-house draw game. It launched in January 1992 prior to Pick 3 being activated. The game is a pick 6 draw lottery with the numbers coming from a pool of 40 (1-40). Rather than using physical balls the numbers are selected using a random number generator.

One of two automated drawing machines are used for all Louisiana draw lotteries. The RNGs are completely isolated from the computer system that records player tickets and generates Quick Picks. One of three methods is used to generate winning numbers and the method as well as drawing machine (RNG) are chosen at random.

Lotto drawings are held on Wednesdays and Saturdays at about 9:30 pm, which is the cutoff time for ticket sales. There are four (4) prize divisions including the jackpot prize and all but the lowest prize are pari-mutuel, meaning the prize pools are shared with all players holding a winning ticket for those prize pools.

Tickets cost $1 and the jackpot starts out at $250,000. If the jackpot is not won after any drawing, the prize value is rolled over and added to the jackpot for the next drawing which is increased an additional $25,000 regardless of the number of tickets sold.

You must be at least 21 years of age or older to purchase tickets, but only 14 years old to sell them. Persons over the age of 21 can buy tickets for minors but they must be accompanied by an adult to redeem prizes. Winnings of $600 or more are reported and forms must be filed. Wins exceeding $5,000 have 25% federal and 5% state tax withheld. Jackpots are paid in cash rather than annually. Under Louisiana's open records law, all wins over $600 are public information.

How to Play

Tickets are offered for sale at over 2,500 Louisiana Lottery retailers throughout the state. Players can mark six numbers on their play slip choosing from 1-40. You can play up to five sets on each card. Players who mark the QP box or ask a retailer for a Quick Pick can play up to ten games per slip.

If you have favorite numbers or want to try the same Quick Pick selections in subsequent drawings, mark the MultiDraw box for 2, 3, 4, 5, 10, or 20 consecutive draws. The total price of your ticket ($1 per set) will be multiplied by the number of draws you wish to participate in.

How to Win Louisiana Lotto

In order to win or share in the jackpot prize you will need to match all six of your numbers to the winning numbers generated the night of the drawing (6/6). The jackpot occasionally grows to several million dollars and when it does, the odds are you might have to share the prize with someone else due to the excellent odds of winning. The odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 3,838,380. Compare that to odds of 1 in 292,201,338 to win Powerball and the smaller prizes seem more attainable and attractive.

The game is structured (odds) to generate average payouts of $2,000 and $50 for second and third place prize pools, respectively. However, the precise amount may be higher or lower depending on how many people have the winning numbers. The odds of matching five of six numbers (5/6) from the 40 number pool (1-40) are 1 in 18,816. The odds of winning about $50 by matching four of six numbers (4/6) are 1 in 456. Matching three of six (3/6) always awards $3 as this is a fixed prize and the pool isn't shared. The odds of matching three are 1 in 32.
