New York Lotto
Basic information about New York Lotto: The New York Lotto is a twice-weekly draw lottery played in New York State. The game debuted in 1978. Although players receive two plays for one dollar (2/$1), of each dollar wagered only 40% is returned in prizes, the lowest prize-to-administrative-cost ratio of any lottery in the U.S. However the jackpot starts at two million dollars ($2,000,000) and increases each time the top prize isn't won.
Players choose six numbers from a pool of fifty-nine (1-59). Lottery officials draw six numbers plus a bonus number that is only used to determine the second place prize. The odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 45,057,474 per game and 1 in 22,528,737 for each one dollar ticket.
All prizes except are parimutuel except the award for match three out of six (3/6) which is $1. The overall odds of winning any prize are 1 in 46.02. Players must be at least 18 years old to purchase tickets or redeem prizes and taxes are withheld for federal, state, New York City, and Yonkers for residents there. It may be possible for jackpot winners to remain anonymous through the use of a legal trust to claim the winnings. Winners can accept 26 graduated payments with an annuity or elect for a smaller lump sum cash prize.
How to Play
With the exception of subscription purchases (buying tickets in advance for consecutive drawings) lottery tickets must be purchased in person. Some lottery messenger or concierge services will allow you to buy your tickets online and they will go to a retailer in person for you to purchase your ticket(s). Lotto draws occur on Wednesdays and Saturdays with tickets sales halting at 11:00 pm ET on the night of the draw and resuming after the 11:21 pm drawing. Visit the official New York State Lottery Where to Play page to find lottery retailer near you or visit any retailer displaying the NY Lottery logo to buy your tickets
Mark your play slip with six different numbers between one and fifty-nine (1-59) or ask your retailer for a Quick Pick to have a lottery computer choose random numbers for you. Play at least two (2) panels for $1. You can mark up to 10 panels for a total ticket cost of $5 on each play slip.
How to Win New York Lotto
If you match six of six (6/6) numbers out of fifty-nine you will win or share in the jackpot of at least $2,000,000! If nobody wins the jackpot it will increase for the next drawing thirty-cents ($0.30) for each $1 ticket sold before the next draw. 40% of all ticket sales are allocated to prizes and 75% of that is dedicated to the jackpot prize.
Lottery officials draw an extra bonus number which can help you win the second prize. Match five out of six numbers plus the bonus ball (5/6+B) to win or share in the second place prize pool. 7.25% of allocated prize money goes to the second prize pool and your odds of matching the right numbers are 1 in 3,754,789.50 for each dollar played (2 games). When the jackpot is $2m you can expect to win about $150,000 for this match.
The odds of matching five of six (5/6) without the bonus ball are 1 in 72,207.49. The Third Prize pool is 5.50% of allocated prize money so the prize amount will vary depending on the number of winners and amount of tickets sold. The prize is about $1,000 but can vary significantly.
Matching four out of six numbers (4/6) will award the fourth prize which is 6.25% of total prize money. Your odds of matching 4/6 are 1 in 1,089.92. Expect to win about $25.
The final prize is awarded for matching three of six numbers (3/6). The odds of winning $1 are 1 in 48.08.
