Australia Powerball Lotto

Basic Information for the Australia Powerball Lotto: You have to be 18 years of age or older in order to play the game or redeem prizes anywhere in Australia except in Western Australia where the minimum age is 16. Lotteries winnings are not subject to personal income tax.

The game is owned and operated by Tatts Group and played all across the country but administered by different agencies in different areas. Subsidiaries include Golden Casket in Queensland, Lotterywest in Western Australia, New South Wales Lotteries in New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory, South Australian Lotteries in South Australia, and Tattersalls in Victoria and Tasmania.

How Can I Play Australia Powerball Lotto?

You can play Powerball by visiting a local retailer, purchasing or checking tickets online, or downloading the Lott App. The easiest way to play is by choosing QuickPick or marking your entry to choose six (6) numbers plus one (1) Powerball number. The numbers are drawn from separate barrels so it's okay to repeat one of the six numbers for the Powerball. The main barrel contains 40 numbers (1-40) and the Powerball barrel has 20 numbers (1-20).

The game closes for the preceding week every Thursday night at 7:30 pm AEST and results are usually available by 9:00 pm.

You can also plan your play ahead of time with the Advance draw, or participate in multiple draws using the Multi-Week entry. Online players can subscribe to unlimited entries or set the feature to trigger ticket buys when the jackpot reaches a certain amount. All of the ways to play are explained in greater detail inside the Lott Help Center.

How to Win Cash Prizes

There are eight (8) ways to win when you play the Australia Powerball Lotto. There are eight divisions. Division 1 is the Jackpot and you will need to match all six (6) drawn numbers from the main barrel (1-40) plus the winning Powerball number from the Powerball barrel (1-20).

Unlike some lottery games that have set amounts each draw for winning combinations other than the jackpot, the payouts for all divisions depend on how much is in the division prize pool, and how many winners there are that week. If Division 1 (6+Powerball) and Division 2 (6 with no Powerball) aren't won, the jackpot prize goes up and the money in Division 2 is transferred to Division 3 and players who matched 5 numbers plus the Powerball all share in that prize pool.

The odds never change, only the amount in the prize pool. Division 1 is seeded with $3,000,000 after it is won. As the jackpot climbs, more tickets are purchased by players, which makes all of the prize pools grow!

Following are the winning combinations and the odds of winning based on playing a standard game.

Division 1: 6 winning numbers plus Powerball -- 76,767,600:1
Division 2: 6 winning numbers (No Powerball) -- 4,040,400:1
Division 3: 5 winning numbers plus Powerball -- 376,312:1
Division 4: 5 winning numbers (No Powerball) -- 19,806:1
Division 5: 4 winning numbers plus Powerball -- 9,123:1
Division 6: 3 winning numbers plus Powerball -- 641:1
Division 7: 4 winning numbers (No Powerball) -- 480:1
Division 8: 2 winning numbers plus Powerball -- 110:1

Can I increase my Chances of Winning Powerball?

Yes! There are several ways to increase your chances of winning. Buy more tickets or pool your money with friends or co-workers to form a syndicate and you will increase the chances that your numbers will win, but it won't increase your odds of winning.

Australia Powerball Advanced Play

Another way to increase your chances of winning is to try the PowerHit option to guarantee that you'll get the Powerball number.

If you choose to play with a Pick entry you are guaranteed to get either one or two winning numbers from the main barrel. And if you really want to go for the gusto, try one of the System entries where you can pick up to 20 numbers!
