New Jersey voters rejected Question 1 on the November 2016 ballot. It will be 2 years before the gambling referendum can be put before the public again.

Hard Rock International executives along with Jeff Gural of The Big M announced plans in June of 2015 to form a partnership to build a Hard Rock Casino at East Rutherford's Meadowlands Racetrack.  In January 2016 legislators and Gov. Christie passed a bill allowing NJ residents the final say in whether to allow two new casinos outside of AC. That law would only allow current Atlantic City operators to gain licenses. Gural wants to partner with an existing AC casino to build his Hard Rock.

A small casino could be up and running quickly upon approval and a full scale resort costing over $1 billion could be up and running within 12-18 months. The full casino is expected to have over 200 gaming tables and 5,000 slot machines along with at least a dozen restaurants. 200,000 square feet of more than 3 million sq ft of entertainment space would be gaming floor.

Hard Rock already owns 16% of The Meadowlands and has business in more than 60 countries. Counting cafes and entertainment centers without casinos, patrons will find the Hard Rock name on about 200 venues across the globe.
