Lloydminster Regional Entertainment Complex Review
On July 12, 2016, the Frog Lake First Nation (FLFN) Chief & Council announced its plans for the Lloydminster Regional Entertainment Complex project. The announcement was followed by detailed presentations given by FLFN and their development partners to the County of Vermilion River (CVR) and the City of Lloydminster during the last week of July. The complex, which the First Nation estimates the cost of construction at $100 million ($76.8M US), is to be situated on land purchased by the tribe. The 140-acre site along the south side of Highway 16, immediately west of Lloydminster, is located on the Alberta side of the city. Lloydminster straddles the provincial border between Alberta and Saskatchewan and is incorporated by both provinces as a single city with a shared municipal administration.
Plans for the Entertainment Complex facilities include a casino with both VLT and table games; a full-service, a higher-end, 200-room hotel, including spa, business center, fitness facility and pool/indoor water park; fine dining restaurant and lounge; 1,200 person convention center; and a 7,500 seat arena/event center, which will be the home of future a Western Hockey League franchise, concerts, other sports, family entertainment, trade shows and various other events. Plans for the casino include a smaller venue space to host local music and events. A grand entrance will include a visitor center, gallery and gift shop, and the outside area will include plazas, landscaping, and art. According to the First Nation's press release, all of the facilities will be constructed as one build.
So far, feasibility studies have been done, the next step being to submit development permits to the Liaison Committee, who will then present its recommendation to the councils of CVR and Lloydminster. During the presentation last month, a timeline of 2018 was given to break ground on the project.
