The Penang Turf Club was founded in 1864 and is the oldest of all turf clubs in Malaysia and Singapore. The first physical layout of the course was located on Macalister Road from 1869 until 1939 before being moved to its present location on Batu Gantong Road in Penang.
The turfed racetrack is 1,900 meters long and 24 meters wide and located on grounds of 270 acres. The grandstand was expanded in 1979 and now accommodates up to 14,000 fans. The grandstand is three storeys tall and provides unobstructed views from every section.
In addition to horse racing, the Penang Turf Club also has an 18 hole golf course with 7 of the holes within the infield.

Horse races have been run at the Penang Turf Club at its present location on Batu Gantong Road in Penang since 1939. Horses race nearly all year round on Saturday and Sunday with the 2014 season hosting 28 races days; 9 Saturday and 19 Sundays, February through December.

The Par 68, 18 hole golf course at Penang Turf Club is unique in all of Malaysia as it is the only golf course at a racetrack. 7 of the holes are inside the infield and the ninth hole is on the outer course is particularly picturesque.
The Men's Course is 5117 meters long with a slope rating of 119 and course rating of 66.8. The Lady's Course is 4468 meters with a slope rating of 118 and course rating of 68.1. Turf is cowgrass on fairways and rough Serangoon on the greens.
A compulsory caddy fee is charged, insurance and golf set rentals are available.
