Tribal Winds Casino Review Jump to comments

A joint partnership between the federally-recognized Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation and Mohegan Tribe, the respective owners of Foxwoods Resort Casino and Mohegan Sun, Tribal Winds Casino recieved approval on March 21, 2019, from the U.S. Dept. of Interior. The casino is expected to be built on land where the former Showcase Cinema in East Windsor once sat, off Interstate 91, just minutes from downtown Hartford, Connecticut.

According to reports, the casino will open 18-24 months after the start of construction and visitors can expect the latest and greatest gaming experience much like the operators offer in their established Connecticut properties. Visitors can also expect the best and hottest live entertainment and world-class dining options, along with 100,000 sq ft of gaming, 1,800 slots and 60 table games, including 10 poker tables, accordign to the latest information.

March 2026 UPDATE:

As of 2025–2026, the Tribal Winds Casino  project at 171 Bridge Street remains halted with no construction activity or opening date scheduled.
Status for 2025–2026
  • Project Moratorium: Under a 10-year state gaming agreement signed in 2021, a moratorium was placed on building a casino at this site. This agreement effectively prevents development until at least 2031.
  • Current Site Condition: The property, formerly the Showcase Cinema, remains an empty lot.
  • Ownership: The joint venture MMCT (Mashantucket Pequot and Mohegan tribes) continues to own the land, though town officials have previously discussed using eminent domain to acquire the site for other development due to lost tax revenue.

Project History & Obstacles
  • Indefinite Postponement: The tribes officially postponed the $300 million project in December 2020, citing the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on their existing operations at Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods Resort Casino.
  • State Gaming Deal: Governor Ned Lamont's 2021 deal to legalize sports betting and online gambling included the condition that the tribes set aside the East Windsor casino project.
  • Legal & Competitive Pressure: The project initially aimed to compete with the MGM Springfield in Massachusetts but faced years of litigation and federal approval delays before being stalled by the state agreement.
