Project First Light Resort & Casino Review
Update: On September 7, 2018, the Department of the Interior affirmed US District Judge William G. Young's 2016 ruling against the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe removing its trust designation and effectively halting construction based on the 2009 Supreme Court ruling in Carcieri v. Salazar. The ruling states a tribe is only eligible for a land in trust designation if it was considered a tribe under federal jurisdiction when the Indian Reorganization Act passed in 1934. The Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe was not.
According to reports, lawmakers are hoping to pass legislation to supersede the 2016 ruling and the September ruling, however, considering the recent decision by the Department of the Interior, the future of the $1 billion First Light Resort & Casino remains in doubt.
WCD will add news here as its published.
The Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe (People of the First Light) are well on the way to opening their Project First Light Resort & Casino in Taunton, Massachusetts. As proposed, the project will be built in four phases at the intersection of Alfred M Bessette Memorial Hwy & Fall River Expy (Routes 24 and 140). The property will be easy to access from anywhere in New England, only 35 miles from Boston and 20 miles from Providence, Rhode Island.
Once construction begins the first phase should be completed within 12-15 months and will feature a 150,000 sq. ft. gaming floor with 3,000 slots and video poker machines, 150 gaming tables, and a dedicated poker room with 40 tables.
Two fine dining establishments will offer contemporary steakhouse and fresh seafood and Asian fare. An international buffet as well as a food court with up to 10 outlets will feature several 24/7 options.
Entertainment in Phase I will include a center bar with lounge seating and a small stage.
Shopping will be available with as many as 10 retail outlets and over 5,000 parking spaces will be provided between surface parking and a parking garage.
Phase II should be open within two years and will include a 4 star hotel with 300 guestrooms and suites, additional gaming space, spa, pool, terrace, and meeting/event space.
Phase III is expected to open incrementally with first features appearing around the three year mark or a little earlier, and be completed within 5 years of opening. A mid-range hotel with 300 guestroom and a 24 hour restaurant with capacity for 200 diners is expected.
Going beyond the 5-year mark, Phase IV will feature another 300 room family oriented hotel with a 25,000 sq. ft. indoor/outdoor water park, an event center of 15,000 sq. ft. and an additional 700 surface parking spaces.
If the tribe go ;es ahead with the fullscale casino planned, it will be in association with Genting Group.
