Basic information about Lotto 6/49: Lotto 6/49 is a nationwide pick 6 lottery game in Canada administered by the Interprovincial Lottery Corporation. It is one of three regularly scheduled national games and was launched in the summer of 1982. Each of the five regional or provincial lottery corporations also run a smaller, yet similar game known as "Province/Region 49" such as Quebec 49.

Tickets online or from a retailer cost three-dollars ($3) per line. In addition to the regular prize pools in the main game, there is also a secondary raffle draw with a guaranteed prize of one million dollars ($1,000,000). Each of the provincial lotteries also run an add-on game known widely as "Extra" but also as "tag" or "Encore" depending on which organization is offering the game. The add-on game costs an extra dollar ($1) to play.

With the add-on game, depending on the region, six or seven additional numbers will be generated with prizes ranging from 100,000 for matching all six digits or $250,000 to $1,000,000 for a seven-number match depending on the region. Quebec and Ontario are able to offer the higher prize due to greater populations and ticket sales, while Alberta, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and the territories award the lower prize.

Winnings ffom games like 6/49 are considered windfalls in Canada and are not subject to tax. Players must have attained the age of majority in their province in order to purchase lottery products or redeem prizes.

How to Play

Canada's Lotto 6/49 is a pick six (6) draw game. Players choose six numbers per play and the lottery draws six plus one bonus number which is used to award two of the lower prizes. Tickets can be purchased online in most provinces from the crown lottery corp or at retailers throughout the country. In order to win or share the jackpot, you will need to match all six numbers drawn (6/6). The minimum jackpot is five-million dollars ($5m) or a share of 79.5% of the Pool's Fund.

Six additional prize categories are also available in the main game, but only the highest paying prize combination on any single play will be paid. Players can choose up to ten lines, or sets of numbers, on each play slip in some jurisdictions but the maximum number of lines that can be printed on a single ticket varies from region to region.

Mark the "Extra" box or ask your retailer for Extra Play and add $1 to the price of each line.

How to Win Lotto 6/49

Matching all six numbers (6/6) will award the jackpot which increases with every draw if it hasn't been awarded. The odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 13,983,816. All four of the top prizes are parimutuel so the total prize pool will be split equally among one or more winners.

Matching five out of six numbers, plus the bonus number (5/6+) will award the second prize, which usually ranges between $100,000 and $500,000. The odds of winning this prize are 1 in 2,330,636 and the prize pool represents 6% of the Pool's Fund.

Match five out of six (5/6) without the bonus number to win or share in 5% of the Pool's Fund at odds of 1 in 55,492.

Correctly guessing four of the six main numbers (4/6) awards a higher percentage of the Pool's Fund because many more people share in the winnings with odds of 1 in 1,033. The fourth place prize for (4/6) match is shared from among 9.5% of the Pool's Fund.

The prizes for (3/6), (2/6+), and (2/6) are fixed at $10.00, $5.00, and a free $3.00 ticket respectively. The respective odds are 1 in 56.7, 1 in 81.2, and 1 in 8.3. The overall odds of winning on a $3 play are about 1 in 6.6.

The overall odds of winning the $1 Extra game are 1 in 6.5. Prizes are awarded for matching 1, 2, 3, or 4 of 4 numbers. Prizes are $1, $10, $1,000, and $500,000 respectively at odds of 1 in 6.8, 1 in 141, 1 in 1 in 3,764,3769,906, and

The Guaranteed Prize Draw raffle pays for an exact match of the 10-digit number in the order they appear, awards $1,000,000, and has variable odds depending on how many tickets have been sold for that draw. Exact odds are 1 in # of tickets sold. The prizes cannot be shared and it doesn't carry over (increase) from draw to draw.
